About City

Madrid is the capital city of the Kingdom of Spain. It is considered as the largest municipality in both the Community of Madrid and Spain as a whole and has a population of almost 3.2 million with a metropolitan area population of 6.5 million. After London and Berlin, Madrid is the third-largest city in the European Union and its metropolitan area is the third- largest after London and Paris. It lies on the River Manzanares in the centre of both the country and the Community of Madrid.

According to Monocle magazine, Madrid is the 17th most liveable city in the world. Madrid possesses modern infrastructure and preserves the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets and the landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Royal Theatre, the Buen Retiro Park, etc. Madrid is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. The Monument symbols of the city are Cibeles Palace and Fountain.

The Madrid population has increased since the city became the capital of Spain in the mid-16th century. The population dropped from 1970 until the mid-1990s which in turn affected other European cities was caused by the growth of satellite suburbs at the expense of the downtown region within the city proper. The traditional religion in Madrid is Roman Catholic.  As the capital city of Spain, the city has attracted immigrants from around the world.
